Captain America: Brave New World is now out in theaters and fans are reacting to the film. Reviews are also coming out left and right, and while the film is getting good to great reviews from some places, others aren’t so glowing. Our friend Brandon Davis of Phase Hero sat down with Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah and talked to him about the film. One thing that came up in their conversations was about the reshoots that the film went through and how extensive they were.
“With this, we always knew that we wanted to experiment and push certain limits. This is a more grounded movie than, I think, some of the things you’ve seen recently but you’re always turning dials. So, even with something like Serpent Society, these are characters that are very heightened in publishing. We wanted to play with how far can we go to really bring what’s so exciting about Serpent Society but make sure it fits into the world of the film.
“That’s one of those things where you know when you’re coming back for additional photography that you have the opportunity to refine, so there was stuff like that. Those are the sorts of things that you’re really, really thinking about.

“The other thing, too, is, in terms of figuring out how this movie fits in with other things that are coming, you are iterating and experimenting, knowing that you can come into AP and also do that. I think what was specifically different about this process was that we ran into a strike and when we ran into a strike, at a certain point, it was pencils down. Not just for us but for other movies coming after us. So, it meant that when the actors strike and the Writers Guild strike had passed, then we were able to pick our pencils back up and figure out, ‘Oh, this and this is what we need, this is how it interfaces with other stories.’
“We only did one period of additional photography which is the case on all of these movies and it’s just a part of filmmaking at this scale. When you think about so many movies that you love from Star Wars to Jaws to Lord of the Rings to all those movies… this is a part of the process just because when you’re making something of this scale, there are so many variables and AP becomes essential to fine-tuning and coming up with a thing that we know audiences will love and it’s really as a benefit to the audience to try to make it the best movie it can be.”
With reports out there that more than half the film was reshot, Onah puts those to rest with his comments here. It also seems like the Writer’s and SAG strikes both stunted the growth of the film at important points. Luckily, they got the whole thing finished and released.
What Did We Think Of Captain America: Brave New World?

Here’s what we had to say about Captain America: Brave New World in our 90% review.
Disconnected from the MCU at large, or at least keeping the previous stories of Sam Wilson intact, Captain America: Brave New World is a riveting story of pressure and what it means for people to have expectations of you. The mantle of Captain America is not one to be taken lightly. Captain America: Brave New World answers the question of whether or not Sam Wilson is worthy of it, at least it did for me. That is a resounding yes. For a film that’s designed to bridge the gap to an even bigger, more cosmic, multiversal side of Marvel, it does the job. It also does the job of providing plenty for audiences to chew on concerning politics, race, and other issues we all face in our daily lives.
The film gives us the changing of the guard from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson as Captain America and then some. The action is excellent, and while there are some issues with pacing and the CGI, the film does a great job of making audiences care about a new Captain America.
