Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK is mostly just the last handful of episodes of the anime series combined into a feature-length anime film. Mostly. However, the plot twists start coming after the credits roll, with brand new footage that fundamentally alters the story. For those who aren’t familiar with either the anime or the manga, this will be a wild ride the entire time. For those who are familiar with them, you will start laughing, and then your jaws will be gaping open in shock at what just happened.

Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK is probably the last anime film of the Attack on Titan anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Hajime Isayama. Studio MAPPA (Zombie Land Saga, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man) is the animation studio behind this anime film. In fact, MAPPA is the same studio behind the fourth and final season of the anime series, taking over from WIT Studio (The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Ranking of Kings, Spy x Family) who worked on seasons 1-3. Crunchyroll is the company licensing this anime film for its NA debut.

Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK: Synopsis
Alas, Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK hasn’t even made its NA theatrical debut yet. In fact, this review is only possible thanks to an advance press screening. Thus, I will present to you the official synopsis of this anime film from Crunchyroll instead of a spoiler-filled plot summary. You can read that synopsis below:
Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK brings together the last two episodes of the highly acclaimed anime series in a theatrical experience delivering the epic finale in a colossal-sized omnibus film.
Humanity lived quietly behind massive walls built to protect themselves from the threat of monstrous creatures called Titans. Their century of peace was shattered by an attack on their city that left a young child, Eren Jaeger, motherless and vowing revenge on the titans.
Years after joining the Survey Corps, Eren finds himself facing a deadly foe, and ultimately gains a special ability that unveils a new truth about the world he knows…
After venturing beyond the walls and separated from his comrades, Eren finds himself inspired by this new truth and plots the “Rumbling,” a terrifying plan to eradicate every living thing in the world. With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, a motley crew of Eren’s former comrades and enemies scramble to halt his deadly mission. The only question is, can they stop him?
Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK: The Good

Once you’ve watched Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK, it’s impossible to deny that the story of the anime film is the best part about it. Fun fact: director Yuichiro Hayashi has actually mentioned that he originally drew the storyboards for The Final Chapters with the idea that they should be watched as a single movie in mind. And wow, does he get that movie. It’s a very dark, bloody, and oftentimes horrific story that movie has, but it’s also an amazing piece of fiction. One that’s even more relevant in this day and age, especially since the anime film goes into the cycle of war and hatred, as well as the evils of humanity in general, but especially the evils of fascism. I can’t really go into any more detail without spoilers. You’ll just have to trust me on this until you watch it for yourself.
Oh, and another thing you’ll have to trust me on: the plot twist. It happens after the credits finish rolling. There’s even a warning at the very beginning of the anime film that it’s there to keep you from accidentally skipping past it…hopefully. Let’s just say that this post-credits scene changes the ending completely. Or rather, it builds on it in a way that you’ll never expect. All changing the previously poignant and bittersweet (heavy on the bitter) ending into something shockingly hopeful. Seriously, watch this anime film. You won’t regret it.
What you also won’t regret is the animation. It really feels like MAPPA pulled out all the stops for this anime film. Well, to be fair, it’s the same stuff they had in the anime series, but that still doesn’t change the fact that it looks amazing. Especially for those who’ve never watched the anime.
Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK: The Bad

Without that post-credits scene, I would’ve said that this anime film is great, but a tad depressing. With that scene now, it feels…well, still dark and horrific. However, that post-credits scene makes it feel like it was all worth it. Again, watch that post-credits scene. It’s that much of a game-changer for the anime as a whole.
I won’t blame you if you want to watch something fluffy and sweet to compensate though. Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK is amazing, but emotionally intense and a bit draining. If you want, I would suggest watching Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF, Senpai is an Otokonoko, My Deer Friend Nokotan, and/or Blue Box. Soft and fluffy anime like that are just the thing to unwind with after that roller coaster ride of an anime film.
