Buffy The Vampire Slayer hasn’t been on the air for more than 20 years, but that hasn’t stopped the show from gaining immense popularity in syndication and on streaming. Now, according to Deadline, the series is getting a reboot at Hulu with Sarah Michelle Gellar starring and Chloe Zhao directing the pilot. The series will be written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. It comes from 20th Television and Disney’s Searchlight TV.
The reboot is hiring a writers room soon, which usually means that a studio has high expectations for the series. It’s unknown at this time who else from the original cast will return.
The new series is executive produced by Gellar, Zhao, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and the original series’ executive producers Gail Berman and Fran Kuzui. Dolly Parton is also a producer on the series with her company Sandollar.
For those wondering, Joss Whedon will have no involvement in the reboot. He has not worked in Hollywood in any capacity since facing misconduct allegations in 2021.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer started off as a movie in 1992 and aired on the WB for five seasons from 1997-2001, and then for two more on UPN. The spinoff Angel ran on the WB for five seasons from 1999-2004.
The biggest hurdle for a reboot of the series has been Sarah Michelle Gellar, but it seems like she’s changed her tune with this news. According to Deadline’s sources, the negotiations restarted after a December interview for he latest series Dexter: Original Sin.
