Despite low review scores, Flight Risk managed to take the top spot at the weekend box office.

This weekend brought another shake-up to the box office. Despite having low reviews; leading the charge was the thriller Flight Risk per Box Office Mojo, which soared into first place with a solid $12.0 million debut; higher than I predicted last week.

Flight Risk managed to captivate audiences with its high-stakes action and gripping storyline, drawing in a broad demographic of moviegoers. While it wasn’t scoring highly with critics; it did mange to put forth a strong enough marketing campaign to draw in audiences.

Mufasa: The Lion King Still Roaring in Second Place

Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King was not far behind, pulling in $8.7 million on its sixth weekend. While the film’s total domestic haul now stands at an impressive $626 million worldwide, this weekend saw a slight decline in earnings as the nostalgia-driven prequel continued to find a steady audience.

One of Them Days Keeps the Laughs Coming At The Box Office

In third place, the comedy One of Them Days delivered $8.0 million, proving that laughter still holds significant box office appeal. The film, featuring an ensemble cast and sharp wit, continues to benefit from strong word of mouth. Though it dropped a couple of spots from its previous weekends, it remains a fan-favourite, appealing to audiences looking for lighthearted fun amidst the heavier fare.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Moana 2 Round Out the Top Five

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 kept in fourth place with $5.5 million, continuing its reliable run with family audiences. Despite being in its seventh weekend, the blue speedster remains a major draw, with a cumulative total keeping the franchise a strong contender in the animated realm.

Meanwhile, Disney’s Moana 2 took fifth place, earning $4.3 million. Though the animated sequel has performed steadily since its release, this weekend saw it reclaim the fifth-place spot after dropping out of the Top 5 last week. Still, the beloved oceanic heroine and her adventures remain a draw for younger audiences and families, keeping the film afloat amidst a busy slate of releases.

Next Week’s Release

The big new release next week is Dog Man.

The movie is a strong contender for the family market. The movie is looking to bring in $21 million to $28 million. While the marketing for it is strong, it’s not an established brand like other family fare (i.e. Mufasa or Moana 2). I estimate it’ll make closer to $24 million although with the current low earnings of the box office in general, it’ll easily take the first place spot regardless.

As always, we’ll find out next week!
