Even at first glance, it appears that Gremlins and The Goonies have quite a bit in common with each other. The former is a 1984 horror-comedy film starring a group of children as they try to manage their increasingly troublesome and horrific little gremlin pet. Meanwhile, the latter is a 1985 adventure comedy film that also stars a group of children searching for an ancient buried pirate treasure in order to save their hometown. In fact, they’re so similar in premise and theatrical debut dates that you would think that the same writer wrote the scripts for both of them.

If you thought that, then congratulations! You are correct. American filmmaker Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay for both films, as well as for other teen comedies of the era like Young Sherlock Holmes. Columbus then went on to direct other famous teen comedy films such as Adventures in Babysitting and Home Alone. All of which went on to become blockbuster hits. Honestly, they were and are practically household names in classic teen comedy films. Clearly, he has a knack for these sorts of films.

So how are these all related, you might ask? Well, as it turns out: Chris Columbus wants to work on a sequel to some of his old teen comedies. Namely: Gremlins and The Goonies.

New Gremlins and The Goonies Films: Details

Deadline, among other news, has just revealed that Warner Bros. has a new Gremlins and The Goonies films in the works, featuring Chris Columbus’s work. Alas, exactly what capacity he will have in those films is unknown at this point. We don’t know if he will direct these films, or return as the writer, or even both at once. All we know is that Chris Columbus is working on the very much unexpected sequels to those films, and that’s it.

Unfortunately, we don’t even know anything about these Gremlins and The Goonies. We don’t have production crew or cast, or titles, or even so much as a release window for them yet. It’s just too early to tell. We will just have to wait for Warner Bros. to give us that news at a later time.

Tune back in to THS to find out more about these mystery Gremlins and The Goonies films when we do.
