With their massive hold on the global anime industry, it’s no wonder that Crunchyroll would eventually turn their sights towards manga in the digital format. In fact, they have actually already done so. Crunchyroll has already tried something similar with Crunchyroll Manga, which launched all the way back in October 30, 2013. It even had a good and long run, lasting for well over a decade. Alas, there is a reason why I’m referring to that service in the past tense. It ended back in December 11, 2023. Thus, it marked the end of Crunchyroll’s foray into the digital manga service.

Or at least, that was what we thought was the case. Right up until now, when Crunchyroll announced that they are bringing the service back. Albeit, in a new form, but still. Wait, you don’t believe me? Then let’s find out more about this old new service together, shall we?

Crunchyroll Manga: Details

At the very least, the title looks very artsy.

At Sony’s CES 2025, Crunchyroll officially announces the impending launch of their old new digital manga app: Crunchyroll Manga. This will be a new app available exclusively as a new premium add-on option for Crunchyroll subscribers. This app will launch on the iOS and Android, with its initial debuts being in the U.S. and Canada. Alas, while there is no browser integration at the moment, they do mention that they plan to implement it in the future.

In fact, Crunchyroll’s president has something to say about that upcoming Crunchyroll Manga. You can check out his words below:

Crunchyroll Manga will be a premiere online manga app that carries catalogs from renowned publishers, offering fans unparalleled access to the visionary works that inspire the anime we love. As we strengthen partnerships in this exciting new venture, we aim to add even more value to the Crunchyroll membership, complementing our vast anime library, Crunchyroll Game Vault, and extensive selection of products in the Crunchyroll Store.

Research shows that nearly 70% of anime fans read digital manga at least once a month, highlighting the immense demand for this medium. Crunchyroll Manga will not only meet this growing interest but also fuel the continued global popularity of anime and manga alike.

Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll

Fortunately, it won’t be long before we get to see this new app. Purini mentions that Crunchyroll Manga will make its debut sometime “later this year“, which means a 2025 release date for this app. Alas, that’s as specific a date as we will get for now. We will just have to wait for Crunchyroll to give us a more specific release date later.

Tune back in to THS to find out more about Crunchyroll Manga and other digital manga services when we do.
