At That Hashtag Show, we are passionate about film and television. The year 2024 has brought us an incredible array of new and exciting series across all our favorite channels and streaming platforms. So, to help you catch up on what you may have missed, I’ve compiled a list of favorites from each of our reviewers!

Let’s dive in!

X-MEN ’97

Kurtis Smejkal comes in hot with my #1 favorite show of the year, X-Men ’97 on Disney+. When asking Kurtis why this was his standout series, this is what he had to say: “My favorite new show was X-Men 97′. The show brought back the characters and stories I cared about as a child and made them relevant, captivating, and poignant to me as an adult. All the while keeping me on the edge of my seat wanting to find out what happens next episode.

HYSTERIA!

Hunter Bolding chose Hysteria! on Peacock. “The series is heavy metal plus Bruce Campbell as a sheriff. That’s enough, but the fact that it combines truly terrifying visuals plus some great performances makes for a hit for Peacock.” I also really enjoyed this series. It’s new and different. Also, who doesn’t love a satirical and scary take on the Satanic Panic?

Agatha All Along

Jessica Lancaster has chosen another of my favorites with Marvel’s Agatha All Along on Disney+. “Down, down, down the road! This series centering middle-aged women and the queer community certainly breaks the “Marvel mold” in the best possible way. It has compelling witch lore and magic, great practical sets and effects, a banger recurring song, and a coven you can’t help but fall in love with. Plus, it’s a reminder that we as a society haven’t been appreciating Kathryn Hahn’s talent enough.”

THE PENGUIN

Diving into the dark, sinister world of Gotham City, Manny Gomez chooses Max’s The Penguin as his favorite new series of 2024. “It was amazing to see Colin Farrell get lost in Oswald. Not to mention showcasing the complex yet simple motivations of the classic Batman villain that has often been showcased in media. Not to mention showing that the dark knight is in good hands.

Shōgun

Jeff Ewing’s top pick of 2024 is FX/Hulu’s Shōgun. “Shōgun’s exploration of the political and military machinations of Feudal Japan created such memorable characters, beautiful vistas, and harrowing situations that I couldn’t wait for new episodes. I flinched a little at the Japan-set series having an English protagonist, but Cosmo Jarvis has just enough sass to make John Blackthorne a charming addition, and I’ll be devastated that Anna Sawai’s Mariko won’t be able to continue onward but there’s more than enough story and beautiful worldbuilding to keep it going. It’s already one of my favorite series of the decade.”

DAN DA DAN

Benjy Kwong has chosen DAN DA DAN on Crunchyroll for his top 2024 series pick! “The anime adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga on Shonen Jump, with animation by Science SARU, and showing on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu. Amazing action horror comedy combined with rom-com antics and some truly heartwrenching scenes make it one of the best new anime of 2024.

MATLOCK

Since Kurtis picked my top favorite new series, X-Men ’97, I thought I’d share my second favorite new show of 2024! It’s the Matlock reboot on Paramount+. Starring Kathy Bates as Maddie Matlock, the series follows her quest for revenge against the law firm she holds responsible for her daughter’s death. Bates delivers some of the best performances of her career, and her captivating presence keeps me fully engaged with the show and not sharing my attention with games on my phone.
