Patrick Bateman is about to get taken over by someone who’s already played plenty of psychos. Variety is reporting that Austin Butler is taking over as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming interpretation of the Bret Easton Ellis book American Psycho for LIonsgate.

There were rumors of other actors taking on the role, but Butler won out over other challengers for the highly coveted role. The script comes from Scott Z. Burns but will not be a full remake of the 2000 film, but a new adaptation of the original novel. There are marked differences between the original novel and that 2000 cult classic, so there’s room for Guadagnino to make it his own.

In the original film, which is set in the ’80s, Christian Bale played Patrick Bateman in a star-making role for the actor. It arguably catapaulted him to the superstar status he’s at now. Guadagnino is best known for directing Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, and most recently Queer. The new take could see more of the erotic subtext brought out in favor of the horror satire of the 2000s film. Guadagnino is no stranger to making classic horror films his own, he did the remake of Suspiria that took the original Italian Giallo to a new direction.

Butler is fresh off films like Elvis and Dune: Part Two that earned him intense accolades.
