James Gunn is quite possibly one of the most famous directors in the world right now. Mostly because of the ever-growing list of superhero films he has made in his decades-old career. A list that is sure to keep growing due to his appointment as the co-chairperson and CEO of DC Films alongside Peter Safran back in November 2022. All of this was at the behest of David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, who was so impressed with Gunn’s and Safran’s advice that he made them both the heads of DC Films more or less on the spot.
You may recognize DC Films by a more familiar name these days: DC Studios. The company is the primary competition for Marvel Studios, after all. And from the looks of things, they’re about to provide even more competition to the MCU, especially in the R-rated department.
R-Rated Movies at DC Studios: James Gunn Details
Collider has just revealed that there are multiple R-rated projects in the works and on the way at DC Studios, all from the mouth of James Gunn himself. It’s really no surprise when you look at Gunn’s filmography. Gunn has previously directed The Suicide Squad (2021) and Peacemaker (2022). Both of these are most definitely rated R, 16+, or even unrated. The outstanding success of both projects has almost certainly resulted in this slate of new R-rated projects at DC. In fact, Gunn himself has a few words to say about these projects to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, which you can check out below:
It’s not about testing out to see if this thing works. It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that. If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care — whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do.

A pressing question might be going through your head right now: does this announcement have anything to do with the recent success of Deadpool & Wolverine at Marvel Studios? The answer turns out to be “Yes”. In the same interview with Weintraub, James Gunn confirms:
People love that character. People love that format for that thing. You know Peacemaker is unrated, basically. So, we have all sorts. I like the idea of doing all sorts of different things.
Alas, we don’t know exactly what is incoming on DC Studio’s slate of R-rated projects. James Gunn insists that “more than one” things are close to being greenlit, but that’s it. We’ll just have to wait for more news about these projects from Gunn or DC later.
Tune back into THS to find out more about James Gunn and his other works at DC Studios when we do.
