DAN DA DAN Ep. 5 “Like, Where Are Your Balls?!” is…not quite as odd an episode as the title implies. It’s actually a pretty straightforward story. So long as you ignore the obvious stuff, and remember what had happened in the previous episodes. Oh, and with the surprise reappearance of a character you had thought dead by this point.

DAN DA DAN Ep. 5 “Like, Where Are Your Balls?!”: Synopsis

Let’s just say: he has a reason to look shocked.

Alas, DAN DA DAN only recently made its debut. In fact, DAN DA DAN Ep. 5 “Like, Where Are Your Balls?!” only just made its debut five days ago as of this writing. Thus, here’s the official synopsis from Crunchyroll instead of a spoiler-filled plot summary. You can check out that synopsis below:

Victorious against Turbo Granny, Momo and Okarun regain peace. They have gotten closer through the traumatic experience, but they find their relationship to be awkward. That is when Okarun discloses something important to Momo.

Okarun, do you really have to stand like that?!

For once, it’s the story of DAN DA DAN Ep. 5 “Like, Where Are Your Balls?!” that’s the star of the show instead of the action. Mostly because this isn’t an action episode. It’s more of a slice of life romcom episode. All starring Momo and Okarun, of course, as they try to navigate the chasms and pitfalls of teenaged romance. Complete with the classical misunderstandings in one of the most hilarious cases I’ve seen of it. Clearly, this episode shows that Yukinobu Tatsu is as good as writing romcoms as he is at writing shonen action sequences.

That said, in spite of the lack of any action sequences in this episode, the animation is still very high quality. Science SARU show once more that they are committed to making quality animation, because this episode continues the trend of this anime being a very good-looking show. It’s not quite to the level of Black Butler -Public School Arc- and Blue Box, but it’s definitely close. Very close.

Well, it isn’t good for Okarun.

My only complaint isn’t against the episode, but it’s really more of an observation of just how bad Okarun has it at his school. To summarize: he just gets constantly, viciously, and casually bullied by his fellow students just from us seeing how his day goes. Even just in this episode, other kids would ram him so hard that he gets knocked to the ground and throw volleyballs full force into his face, and no one apologizes to him. No one. Seeing all that casual bullying with not one teacher or even just fellow kid try to stop it is just…traumatic, really. When you see all that, it’s no wonder that Okarun has so many issues around friends that he does.

Aside from that, if you’re an action junkie, then you might be put off by DAN DA DAN Ep. 5 “Like, Where Are Your Balls?!” for its distinct lack of action. If that’s the case, then may I recommend Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaSolo LevelingKaiju No. 8, and/or DDDD? Those anime series should have more than enough action to satisfy any action junkie. At least, until DAN DA DAN returns to the action.
