Game of Thrones might not be at the peak it once was, but Warner Bros. is banking on the series once again with a new movie. They’ve been developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe. The movie is in the earliest stages of development with no filmmakers or actors attached at this point. There’s no word on what section or time period of Westeros the film is set either. This marks a shift from the normally lucrative TV market for the series. They’ve long wanted it to remain as a prestige HBO series, but now that’s changed.
Since the end of the series in 2019, there have been massive changes at Warner Bros and HBO and the TV landscape as a whole. Projects that would normally be movies are now on TV, and vice versa. Warner Bros. is developing new Lord of the Rings movies while they’re also bringing Harry Potter to TV.
Game of Thrones has the prequel series House of the Dragon that is ongoing and a new prequel series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms also planned for 2025. They haven’t gone into what happens after the series, which is a direction the movie could possibly take.
We’ll have to see how this story develops as we get more information.
