BlumFest 2024 at New York Comic Con was a huge success! The panel was moderated by Nicole Byer who you may know from the Netflix series, “Nailed It”. It featured many guests from a variety of projects that are in the works from the horror production company, which could take a while as they announced that they have 10 feature films being released in 2025.
That Hashtag Show was invited to attend the panel and had a great time getting excited about their slate for next year. Right off the bat we were treated to a video on the screen featuring Kevin Bacon, asking all of us to “get in the van”. An invitation to join Blumhouse’s fan program “The Van”.
BLUMHOUSE ONLINE SHOP
Byer’s first guest for BlumFest was none other than Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse Productions, who would hang around for the rest of the panel. Blum would also introduce us to their new online shop. There you can shop for a treasure trove of exclusive Blumhouse merchandise. From collectibles to killer apparel there is something for every Blumhouse fan.
THE WOLFMAN AT BLUMFEST
The first film showcased during the panel is the highly anticipated film based on the classic Universal Monster, “The Wolf Man”. Byer and Blum were joined on stage by director Leigh Whannell. The crowd was shown the chilling trailer for the film that showcased the terrifying sound design of the film. They discussed the importance of getting the right actors to be able to suspend disbelief in unbelievable situations and their use of practical effects. You can check out the trailer below!
MORE FROM BLUMHOUSE
BlumFest then treated us to a teaser trailer for the upcoming horror-thriller, “The Woman in the Yard” directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Danielle Deadwyler. What was creepy about this trailer was the way it was all happening during the day.
We were then treated to the final trailer for Blumhouse’s first video game titled. “Fear the Spotlight”. Blum commented on the game saying that he wanted to make an indie, gritty, original game. He also says that if you like their movies, your also like their games. “Fear the Spotlight” is available now.
DROP AT BLUMFEST
We then say the first trailer for Christopher Landon’s upcoming horror thriller. “Drop”. The film follows a woman, played by Meghann Fahy, who goes on a date and receives an ominous AirDrop that shows a masked man in her home threatening to hurt her son, unless she kills her date.
Both Landon and Fahy were at the panel to discuss the film. They discussed how technology makes us all more vulnerable, as we now live in an age where we can be harassed by people we can’t see. Fahy talked about her experience making the film, as this was her first time in the genre.
One of the great names in horror, Mike Flanagan then stopped by to talk about his remake of “The Exorcist” with Blum. He said he chose to make it because its one of the most legendary horror films of all time.
HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SEQUELS
BlumFest then moved on with Blum talking about the highly anticipated “Black Phone 2”. He revealed that it starts shooting very soon and that it will be released on October 17th of next year. He also said that they felt no obligation to make this sequel but were very excited about the idea. Just as “Black Phone” was a middle school coming-of-age film, this sequel will now be a high school coming-of-age film.
On to another sequel “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2”. Blum revealed a new poster for the film featuring Freddy Fazbear that included the release date of December 5, 2025. Blum talked about the success of the film and why it was able to connect with audiences. He said that it was the result of working on the film for about 8-10 years and working closely with Scott Cawthon the entire time. This all resulted in a film that was faithful to the game that fans love.
The final sequel they talked about at BlumFest was, M3gan 2.0. Allison Williams was on hand to talk about the sequel. She was able to tease that this next film is a lot bigger and more expansive. Williams also revealed that the filming just wrapped and that doing it again was fun, and that due to the practical use of a M3gan seeing the animatronic in repose while shooting was terrifying. There was also an ominous message on screen from M3gan herself.
Throughout the panel there were also a lot of mentions of Blumhouse’s partnership with James Wan’s Atomic Monster. Blum said that when it comes to horror movies, there is no magic approach, only opposite ways of making films. He added that he learned that there are some things that Atomic Monster can do that they can’t.
Everyone attending BlumFest at New York Comic Con was able to also score a free t-shirt that had the slate of films on the back. Check in with us throughout the week as we have some interviews with the panelists!
