Bridgerton viewers and Jane Austen fans rejoice – something’s brewing over at Netflix. The streamer is reportedly in the process of developing a Pride and Prejudice TV series.

Currently, the series remains at an early stage. So, we don’t have many details to share just yet. What we do know is the series would be helmed by Dolly Alderton. Alderton is best known for her 2018 bestselling memoir Everything I Know About Love. Her novel recently got a screen adaptation as a series from BBC One and Peacock in 2022. The potential Pride and Prejudice project comes from producer Lookout Point (Gentleman Jack).

Netflix did not reveal casting details, or any further information about the series. Since it is still in the development stage, there is always the possibility that the streamer won’t greenlight the project at all. However, with the general love for Jane Austen’s work and Netflix’s success in romantic period drama series with Bridgerton, it does make sense that the streamer would pursue this project.

Austen’s original 19th century novel Pride and Prejudice frequently makes “best-of” lists of literature today; you probably know someone who describes it as their favorite book. As such, it’s no surprise that the novel has made the jump to screen in a number of previous adaptations. Some of the most popular iterations include the 1995 BBC series starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, and the 2005 feature film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. 

Netflix previously delved into Austen’s catalog with a 2022 adaptation of Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson.
