Marvel hasn’t really leaned into the elements of horror movies since Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Luckily for us, that film has something to do with Agatha All Along. The new series coming to Disney+ tells the story of Agatha Harkness, the witch from WandaVision who was trapped in Westview by Wanda. Her story begins with a different sort of television, this time a cop procedural. There are clues and hints as to what Agatha is investigating, but a new/old witch in her life, Rio Vidal, messes things up and gets Agatha back on track to get her powers.
The two-episode premiere for Agatha All Along has a bit of a tale of two halves going. The first half, which is dominated by the police procedural story, doesn’t take as many swings as I would have liked. However, the second episode, where we really learn the story for the episodes to come, is much more exciting. We get extended looks at new characters like the mystery one, played by Joe Locke. and Lilia Calderu, played by Patti LuPone. The “old” characters from WandaVision even get new looks. But this story is about the witches trying to regain their powers.
It’s a fascinating new look at a more magic side of Marvel that we don’t usually get to see. Our current experience is that with Doctor Strange and his type of magic. We’ve gotten looks at the dark side of magic with Wanda and the Darkhold, but there are new witches to see how their powers work here. The second episode collects up Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn), and Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp) to the coven.
So, the question remains, is Agatha All Along worth your watch? Is it going to shake the foundations of the Marvel Universe? Yes and no. At this point, Marvel TV remains a nice side-story to the main event that is the movies. Like the comics, there are the big event issues and branching off those event issues are other comics that give readers a greater look at some of the side characters. Agatha All Along feels very much like this. It’s not appointment viewing for Marvel fans, but if you’re into the spookier side of Marvel and want something to watch, this’ll be a fun watch. It’s got some laughs, and the Salem 7 looks absolutely terrifying so far.
What can we expect going forward? We didn’t get much of Rio in episode two, so she’ll have to either help or hurt Agatha’s chances at getting her powers back. We also don’t know Joe Locke’s name, so for now, he’s just Agatha’s familiar. It seems like his name is a big key to the series’ overall plot. These two episodes were a nice introduction to Agatha All Along, but not earthshakingly action packed like some other Marvel TV series have been.
That being said, I’m intrigued by what’s to come in this series.
Agatha All Along airs at 6:00PM PT on Wednesdays on Disney+.
