All in all, DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 15 is a surprisingly bleak episode for this anime. Or maybe not surprisingly if you’ve been watching the past few episodes. Things have been getting pretty dark lately. Unfortunately, things seem like they will get darker before the end comes.

Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Inio Asano (Solanin, Goodnight Punpun). Said anime also originally premiered as a pair of anime films on March 22, 2024, and May 24, 2024. Production +h. (The Orbital Children) is the animation studio behind this anime. Crunchyroll is the company licensing this anime for its worldwide debut.

Jyo Denhou is the director behind DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 15, with Reiko Yoshida as the writer, and Yoh Koike as the storyboarder. For the anime as a whole, we do still know that Tomoyuki Kurokawa (PSYCHO-PASS) is the director. Reiko Yoshida (Violet Evergarden) is the writer. Takaaki Suzuki (Violet Evergarden series) did the world setting. Nobutake Ito (INU-OH) is the chief animation director and character designer. Satoshi Takezawa (Digimon Adventure) is the color designer. Mika Nishimura (Typhoon Noruda) is the art director. Satoi Inami is the CG director. Takuma Morooka (Moriarty the Patriot) is the cinematographer. Masayuki Kurosawa (Laid-Back Camp) is the editor. Takeshi Takadera ([Oshi no Ko]) is the sound director. Taro Umebayashi (Space Dandy) is the composer responsible for the music.

Speaking of the music: the opening theme song is “Shinsekai Yori” (SHINSEKAIより, lit. ’ From the New World’) by Ano and Lilas Ikuta. This time though, “Seishun Ōka” (青春謳歌, lit. ’ Adolescence Hymn’) by Lilas Ikuta feat. Ano is the new ending theme song for this second part.

While Kadode, Oran, and their friends consider whether to return to Tokyo, the situation there escalates. The government decides to move up the launch of their ark, named *Ocean*, and abandon Tokyo. Kohiruimaki, on his part, has a plan of his own as well.

Yeah, not many moments of good in this episode, and this ain’t one of them.

Honestly, there’s no question that the story is DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 15 is what kept me on the edge of my seat while I was watching it. And wow, did the episode almost entirely drop the slice of life fun from earlier. There’s still a teeny eentsy bit of that slice of life, but for the most part, this episode is a dark sci-fi thriller. Very dark, actually, given that we see a named character commit suicide on-screen. Granted, the anime deliberately left out the exact gory details, but it’s pretty clear that’s what happened. Needless to say, it shows that Inio Asano can write dark thrillers just as well as he can write slice of life. All in the same story to boot.

Of course, the story wouldn’t be complete without the stellar animation from studio Production +h.. Whether it’s things flying when they shouldn’t be or bloody scenes of massacres, they’re doing it all in this episode. The darkest episode that has ever happened in this anime thus far deserves anime film levels of quality animation, and they certainly delivered.

Honestly, DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 15 is the darkest episode of this anime yet. So dark that the fleeting moments of slice of life are definitely not enough to overcome what’s happening back in Tokyo. If you want something light and fluffy to counteract that, then you might want to check out Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF, Senpai is an Otokonoko, or My Deer Friend Nokotan. They should be more than fluffy enough to balance out the dark.
