If you woke up on Tuesday morning and saw some online communities talking about a new Blu-ray release, that normally wouldn’t be that big of a deal. However, this time around, it’s for a movie that has never seen an official Blu-ray release. It’s for Michael Mann’s sci-fi horror classic, The Keep.
It seems like the artist Edward Kinsella might have jumped the gun on posting his new artwork for sale for a Blu-ray cover of The Keep. Twitter/X user Marcus Finch caught the art before it was taken down.
The original post from Kinsella has since been deleted, but it supposedly mentioned how Vinegar Syndrome (one of our favorite Boutique Blu-Ray labels) is doing the release. This is gargantuan news for fans of horror and Michael Mann. Why, you ask? Well, let’s just say that Michael Mann doesn’t really like his version of The Keep. The original film print of the movie is also seemingly lost to time. It wouldn’t be a director’s cut of the film, unless Mann personally worked on it, which he’s stated that he doesn’t want to do.
That means it’ll likely be the producer’s cut, which, if you look hard enough, you can find the film on YouTube or other places on the internet. Either way, even if it’s the theatrical cut or some sort of producer’s cut, it’s been far too long for this film to not have a great physical media release. For those 4K fans out there, it might be a bridge too far to get a nice 4K UHD version, but we’ll have to see. Vinegar Syndrome has done stranger things in the past to get 4K UHD versions of films to work.
What Exactly Is The Keep?
The Keep is based on a novel of the same name from F. Paul Wilson. It was published in 1981 and adapted for the screen by Michael Mann in 1983. The film was absolutely marred by studio interference, enough so, that Michael Mann has all but disowned it. Here’s a quick synopsis of the film.
When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve a problem in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps, the men find something that’s both powerful and terrifying. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims.
The Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore―who just happens to be Jewish―to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way―a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny. The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other…the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened
The soundtrack for the film is fantastic. It’s a synth-heavy masterwork by Tangerine Dream. Not too often does a soundtrack overshadow the movie, but here, Tangerine Dream outdoes itself. It made our list of Top 5 Best Horror Movie Soundtracks in a previous Fright-A-Thon.
As for the Blu-ray release of The Keep? We’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for any sort of announcement from Vinegar Syndrome or Paramount Pictures.
