The box office this weekend got taken over by aliens as Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus became the top movie at theatres this weekend.

Alien: Romulus Takes Control Of The Box Office

As per Box Office Mojo, Alien: Romulus came in first place with $41.5 million.

Last week, the movie was tracking for a $35 million to $50 million opening weekend and I predicted it would be second place with the movie making closer to $35 million. While it was closer to $35 million, it was a bit more than expected and the movie found an audience through positive word of mouth. The movie still has ways to go to recoup its reported $80 million budget, which doesn’t factor in marketing costs. However, with not much else on the horizon for August, and coupled with good word of mouth, the movie has a decent chance of making its money back at the box office.

The movie’s success also ends Deadpool & Wolverine‘s three-week reign as the number one movie at the box office. The movie placed second and made $29 million. It’s no slouch, earning now well over $1 billion. The movie overtook Todd Philip’s Joker to be the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. Todd took to Instagram to congratulate the cast and crew.

This Summer has belonged to Disney which has had hit after hit with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and of course, Alien: Romulus. This is a complete 180 from last year when Disney faltered in finding an audience. Clearly, they took notes and improved.

The Rest Of The Box Office

It Ends With Us placed in third, and despite being in more theatres than last week, saw a significant drop of 52% over its previous week’s debut. the movie made $24 million.

Twisters still has life left in it as it was fourth with $9.8 million at the box office.

Finally, the 15th-anniversary re-release of Coraline rounded out the Top 5 with $8.3 million.

Next Week’s Predictions

This coming weekend sees the release of Liongate’s The Crow remake as well as Blink Twice.

The Crow

The Crow is tracking to bring in roughly $6M-$10M at the box office. Which, even if that’s on the conservative side. Which I don’t think considering it’s a movie based on a relatively unknown property and has had very little marketing. Even with all of that, I see it placing in 5th place, or possibly fourth depending on how much of a dropoff Twisters sees. Still, it’s likely not going to make a huge splash.

There’s no box office tracking for Blink Twice but we don’t really need it to estimate that this will probably be similar in scope to The Crow in looking at $5 million to $10 million and I see it being closer to probably $7 million. I do feel like this is being marketed much less than The Crow and likey will be in 6th place at the box office. Sure, Channing Tatum and Zoe Kravitz are likable and are decent enough box office draws. Still, Amazon MGM hasn’t really been leaning into their star power as much as they could be.

As always, we’ll find out next week!
