They won’t be smiling for long after they see what happened.

The story of DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 8 is definitely the best part of it, and holy shit, was it a story. Much of it was the usual happy slice of life story that dealt with developing our main group of girls that Kadode and Ontan are a part of, all while introducing a pair of new characters to the story. Alas, those two new characters get caught up in the main event of this episode. Without any spoilers: this is probably one of the most horrific episodes to date just in the sheer number of alien fatalities, both shown and implied. It’s this jarring switch between slice of life and sci-fi thriller that’s what I love about this anime. Seriously, Inio Asano is a masterful storyteller.

Of course though, what’s the story with the animation? Fortunately, Production +h. continue to deliver with some very high quality animation. This time, in some very horrific fashion. It does make sense that they would though. After all, they did make the anime film duology that this anime was adapted from. It’s feature-length anime film levels of animation quality, but for an anime series. A bit like Black Butler -Public School Arc-, really.

That’s a lot of bodies.

Alas, if you’re an action junkie, then DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 8 is probably not the episode for you. Yes, it’s got military action in it. However, the military action is played for drama and horror rather than being the typical action scenes you’d find in an action film. There’s a gravitas and tragedy to it that’s more akin to the nuclear missile scene in Independence Day, really. If you want an anime with action more akin to the dogfights from that film, then you might want to check out Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, Kaiju No. 8, and/or The Elusive Samurai for that.
