Shrek was one of the animated film series that was likely a part of a lot of people’s childhoods here in NA region. This is especially true for the first two films, both of which earned acclaim from critics and audiences alike. The latter two films…not so much, although the fourth and (then) final film did redeem itself from the third. All in all though, the tetralogy and associated franchise still earned DreamWorks Animation a lot of money at the box office. So much so that you can understand why they want to continue that franchise. With a fifth film, no less.

Shrek 5: Details

I am on the fence of being either incredibly excited and horribly cringing at this.

Deadline has just revealed that Shrek 5 is in the works at DreamWorks Animation. Yes, that’s right. We are going to get a continuation of the mainline Shrek franchise, much to everyone’s surprise. We even know exactly when we’re going to see this fifth film. According to a spokesperson from DreamWorks (via Twitter): this film will make its theatrical debut on July 1, 2026. Thus, we basically have a two year wait before we can see this possibly final Shrek film. Not a bad idea to rewatch the previous films, which you can stream on Netflix, Peacock, Amazon, and Apple TV.

Bonus: Confirmed Cast

Yes, but will that return be good or bad?

That’s not all, folks! That same Twitter post also confirms that Shrek 5 will feature our star ensemble return to reprise their roles. That ensemble will consist of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. Alas, they are the only confirmed cast we have for now. We’ll just have to wait for DreamWorks Animation to confirm more of the cast as production continues. Tune back in to THS to find out more about who will be in Shrek 5 when we do.
