DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 4 throws a major mood swinger of a spanner into the story. All because of the sudden death of one of the close circle of friends Kadode and Oran are part of. It’s especially jarring after the nice, peaceful intro to this episode.

DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 4 is the fifth episode  (you can read reviews of Ep. 0, Ep. 1, Ep. 2, and Ep. 3 here) of this postapocalyptic science fiction slice-of-life anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Inio Asano (Solanin, Goodnight Punpun). Said anime also originally premiered as a pair of anime films on March 22, 2024 and May 24, 2024. Production +h. (The Orbital Children) is the animation studio behind this anime. Crunchyroll is the company licensing this anime for its worldwide debut.

Tomoyuki Kurokawa is the director behind DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 4, and the only one we know is behind this particular episode. For the anime as a whole, we do still know that Tomoyuki Kurokawa (PSYCHO-PASS) is the director. Reiko Yoshida (Violet Evergarden) is the writer. Takaaki Suzuki (Violet Evergarden series) did the world setting. Nobutake Ito (INU-OH) is the chief animation director and character designer. Satoshi Takezawa (Digimon Adventure) is the color designer. Mika Nishimura (Typhoon Noruda) is the art director. Satoi Inami is the CG director. Takuma Morooka (Moriarty the Patriot) is the cinematographer. Masayuki Kurosawa (Laid-Back Camp) is the editor. Takeshi Takadera ([Oshi no Ko]) is the sound director. Taro Umebayashi (Space Dandy) is the composer responsible for the music.

Speaking of the music: the opening theme song is “Shinsekai Yori” (SHINSEKAIより, lit. ’From the New World’) by Ano and Lilas Ikuta. “ZeZeZeZettai Seiiki” also by Ano and Lilas Ikuta is the ending theme song.

It’s Christmas and the girls are celebrating together. Meanwhile, the mother ship is increasingly decoupling other smaller ships that are being shot down by the Fujin Model 7, but not every one of these kills and subsequent crashes goes smoothly.

Without a doubt, it’s definitely the story of DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 4 that’s the best part of this episode. All because of the tragedy. Yes, that shocking tragedy that occurs in this episode thanks to Inio Asano. They make it hit all the harder by contrasting it with the beginning of this episode. That beginning is basically a happy Christmas party between our band of main characters. That happy start tricks you into thinking that this is just going to be another happy slice of life anime, only to pull the rug out from other you and deal with some very serious tragedy.

Not only that, but how the main characters deal with this tragedy is pretty compelling. We’re basically watching how each of the surviving characters deal with grief. It’s this depth of emotion that’s what makes this anime one of the best recent ones of this season.

Complementing that story is the wonderful animation. All thanks to Production +h., no less. They continue to pull off some very impressive animation quality for this episode, just as they have been for all previous episodes. Basically: it’s feature-length anime film levels of quality the whole way, which makes sense because this anime originally made its debut as a pair of anime films. The resulting eye candy from that animation just enhances the story in some aesthetically pleasing ways.

Note: there is actually a decent amount of action in DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION Ep. 4 in the form of military science fiction action. However, it may not be enough to satisfy all you action junkies out there, since even that military action is relatively sedate. Thus, if you want an anime with high-intensity action, then you might want to check out Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, and/or Kaiju No. 8. All of those anime should have more than enough action to satisfy any and all action junkies.
