The Fall Guy may be kicking off the Summer movie season, but it’s done so with a lukewarm debut. This tepid reception is despite our THS review praising the film as a satisfying action-date movie.
The Fall Guy Doesn’t Stick The Landing
As per Box Office Mojo, the movie made $28.5 million. Which did put it in the first place spot. However, the movie did cost $140 million to produce and the studio had the movie tracking for a $40 million debut. This has fallen short, and while the movie can still make its $140 million back; it’ll have to do so over a longer period. With the NHL playoffs in full swing; and big movies, such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, IF, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on the immediate horizon. It’s going to be a tough task for the movie to make that money back. While it’s likely too early to call the movie a disappointment at the box office, it certainly doesn’t have an easy path ahead of it.
The Force Is Strong With The Box Office
In the second place spot, this weekend was, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, no it’s not 1999 but the movie managed to have a successful re-release at the box office in celebration of Star Wars Day (aka May 4th). The movie was a punch line for many years but over time fans have re-evaluated the film. The recent success of some other Star Wars projects tied to the film (i.e. Obi-Wan Kenobi [2022]) has only raised the profile of the film and this all culminated in a respectful opening for the re-release.
Challengers dropped to third place with $7.6 million at the box office. Tarot was the other new film this week but lukewarm reviews kept it in the fourth place spot with $6.5 million. Finally, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dropped to the fifth place spot, earning $4.5 million at the box office.
Next Weekend Belongs To The Apes
Next weekend sees the release of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. The movie is tracking well at $54 million to $61 million for its opening weekend. Even if the movie fails to meet its tracked amounts, it’ll undoubtedly still be in first place.
As always we’ll find out next week!
