This weekend’s box office belonged, yet again, to Civil War as the movie fended off newcomers Abigail and The Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare.

Keeping It Civil At The Box Office

As per Box Office Mojo, despite dropping 56% over its debut last week, Civil War still managed to bring in $11.1 million this past weekend. The film did open in 91 more theatres than it did initially, undoubtedly softening its drop-off from last week.

Abigail

Abigail debuted in second place with a $10.2 million debut. This is quite a bit less than the $12-$22 million opening that the movie was predicted to open to. While $10.2 million is a respectable number considering the film’s $28 million budget, it still feels like the movie could’ve done more. The movie did have a higher debut at the box office than the director’s 2019 film, Ready Or Not, which debuted at $8 million. whether this movie has legs to support itself, in the long run, remains to be seen, but it certainly seems like the movie failed to meet its somewhat lofty expectations for a film from the directors of the previous two Scream movies.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dropped to third place at the box office, bringing in $9.4 million. The movie has now made $171 million domestically and $485 million worldwide.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare came in fourth. The movie made $9 million. This is on the higher end of its $6-$10 million projected opening. The movie did cost $60 million to make; so unlike Abigail it does have a lot more to recoup. This is also a question of whether it can or not. Its low opening is not overly inspiring.

Spy x Family Code: White rounded out the top 5 with $4.8 million. The Crunchyroll/Toho release was never going to do Dragonball Z levels of box office success. Still, it’s an admirable open for a movie with a relative niche appeal.

Next Weekend

The two major releases next week are Unsung Hero and Challengers. Challengers is projected to bring in $7M-$12M and Unsung Hero is projected to bring in $7M-$14M.

Both movies appear to have tepid excitement heading into next weekend. It’s possible that Challengers may not appeal to a wide audience due to its sexually charged narrative, and similarly, Unsung Hero‘s being a faith-based film will likely limit its wider appeal as well. Still, Zendaya can be a box office draw, but I can’t see the film doing better than second or third place.

As always we’ll find out next week!
