Civil War may have been about a divided country, but the movie certainly united audiences as the movie pulled in a decent haul and took the number one spot.

No War At Theatres This Weekend

As per Box Office Mojo, Alex Garland’s Civil War opened to an estimated $25 million in North America this weekend. This is a record-breaking opening for a wide theatrical release for A24; and is the first #1 film at the theatrical box office for the first time in the company’s history. The distributor has seen some success with other films in the past, but Everything Everywhere All At Once peaked at the third place spot on Easter weekend in 2022. Last year’s Talk To Me debuted in the sixth-place spot. Even Hereditary, one of the studio’s most prominent films debuted in the fourth place spot.

The movie is likely to make back its $50 million budget in the days and weeks to come. Especially with high critic and audience scores.

The Rest Of The Box Office

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dropped to second place, but still earned $15.4 million despite losing over a hundred screens.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire held steady in third place, making $5.8 million; globally, the film has now earned around $160 million. The movie has now well surpassed its $100 million but now being in its fourth week it’s looking like the film will not be considered a financial success.

Kung Fu Panda 4 went from fifth place last week to fourth this week, undoubtedly due to a lack of movies geared to children at the box office. Dune: Part Two also increased from sixth place last week to fifth. Meanwhile, Monkey Man and The First Omen both saw significant drops at the box office from last week and dropped out of the top 5 entirely.

Next Week

The major releases this coming weekend are The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Abigail.

The Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare is looking for a $6-$10 million opening which would put it pretty low at the box office. Guy Ritchie’s previous films, Operation Fortune and Wrath of Man have had varying degrees of success but Wrath of Man came out during the pandemic and did well due to little competition. Operation Fortune had some competition in a similar demographic and performed poorly. So I would expect The Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare to perform similarly.

Abigail is targeting a $12-$22 million opening and could place in the second-place spot. Universal has had a mixed performance with horror this year with both Night Swim and Imaginary underperforming. However, the movie is from directors Matt Bettinell-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Scream VI, Ready or Not) so that may be enough for horror fans to want to check it out.

As always we’ll find out next week!
