Big news today out of the Whoniverse! Disney just unveiled new details about the premiere of the upcoming season of Doctor Who.
The long-running sci-fi series officially returns Friday, May 10 with not just one, but two new episodes on Disney+. The episodes will launch at 7pm EST, timed for a simultaneous drop with BBC iPlayer (debuting episodes at midnight GMT). The premiere will hit BBC One later in the day on Saturday.
The latest installment of Doctor Who sees Ncuti Gatwa take over the role of the Time Lord. He’s joined by a new companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). Gatwa and Gibson made their first full-episode debut during the Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road”. But the May premiere marks the official start of their regular season appearances.
According to Disney, the season will see “the Doctor and Ruby Sunday through infinite adventures across time and space in the TARDIS. From the Regency era in England to war-torn futures, the duo champion the forces of good while encountering incredible friends and dangerous foes.”
Russell T. Davies, who oversaw the first era of Doctor Who’s revival when the series returned in 2005, returns as showrunner for the upcoming season.
“At last, it’s my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures together,” said Davies. “Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that’s been spanning time and space for decades. Don’t miss a second!”
The upcoming season will see the return of a few familiar characters, including Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush. The previously announced guest cast also includes Aneurin Barnard, Anita Dobson, Yasmin Finney, Michelle Greenidge, Jonathan Groff, Genesis Lynea, Lenny Rush, Indira Varma and Angela Wynter.
