Love Lies Bleeding is the latest film from A24. The film stars Kristen Stewart (Spencer) and Katy O’Brian (The Mandalorian) as two tumultuous lovers running away from the demons chasing them.

Lou (Stewart) runs the family Gym business while watching out for her sister (Jenna Malone) who has an incredibly abusive husband (Dave Franco). Their father (Ed Harris) not only runs the local gun range but is also a gun smuggler who the FBI has wanted for years. On one fateful night, Jackie (O’Brian) rolls into town on her journey to Las Vegas to become a professional bodybuilder. The spark between Jackie and Lou is undeniable and the two fall in love.

However, things just can’t be that simple. Love Lies Bleeding takes off and never stops. The film is like a steroid-induced psychedelic fever dream Bonnie and Clyde,

LOVE LIES BLEEDING STARS ARE IMPECCABLE

Love Lies Bleeding would not work if its stars weren’t right. Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian are spectacular together. Their chemistry is off the charts. SPOILER WARNING There are a couple of explicit, provocative sex scenes in the film that even had me blushing.

Kristen Stewart has been making a name for herself in the Indie scene for years. In the film, she continues to prove her talent and staying power. However, the stand out for me was Katy O’Brian. Her performance as Jackie is outstanding. The character is deep and incredibly flawed, but you can’t help but root for her. That’s no easy task. When it comes to career-defining roles, Love Lies Bleeding is going to put O’Brian on the map.

Ed Harris (Westworld) has made a career out of dark and seedy characters, and this one is no exception. Jenna Malone (Rebel Moon) is one of my favorite actresses of all time and I found her heartbreakingly fabulous. I have never seen Dave Franco (The After Party) take on a role like this and he delivers a haunting performance.

THE ERA, THE MUSIC, VIBE

Love Lies Bleeding is set in the 1980s. The costumes, hairstyles, and set design capture the essence of a small-town atmosphere perfectly. The soundtrack is particularly noteworthy for me. Like in Drive, the soundtrack serves as another character that narrates the story, heightens the atmosphere, and immerses you in a specific era and location.

This film is Writer/Director Rose Glass’ second feature film. I cannot wait to see whatever magical films she has in store for us in the future!
