Chris Carter is back in the news because of his ongoing The Chris Carter Collection that’s taking residency in Los Angeles from February 24th to March 10th. You can read more about that here, but he’s also making news for talking about The X-Files. The series creator and brain behind the science fiction classic sat down with The Wrap for an interview that went into Ryan Coogler’s new X-Files series and the possibility for Mulder and Scully to return.
The X-Files came back from time off in 2016 with new episodes and then also in 2018 for a final season. Carter was asked about the involvement of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny for any sort of new episodes or projects. He said that the only way he would come back for any new episodes would be if both of them were on board. There’s been six years since those last run of episodes and it doesn’t look like any progress has been made. However, there is a new series coming from acclaimed director Ryan Coogler.
Here’s what he had to say about if he’s talked to Ryan about the series and if he plans on watching it or being involved with it at all.
I wouldn’t. Only as a cheerleader. They don’t need my blessing. 20th Century Fox and Disney owns the show. They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.
I’m not supposed to be talking about it, according to Disney. But I’ll tell you, yes. I’ve had a conversation with him. Yes, he likes to go with a diverse cast. And he’s got some good ideas.
Yeah. I’m curious. It’s not the easiest show to write because of the subject matter. It’s not like “Law & Order,” where you have the crime of the week. You have to imagine “what if” and that “what if” is oftentimes hard to tackle.
The X-Files made its debut in 1993 at a time when people were more fascinated with UFOs, technology, and all things paranormal than ever before. The series drew huge viewership numbers for Fox and even led to two feature films, The X-Files: Fight the Future and The X-Files: I Want To Believe.
As for any involvement with Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, Anderson has repeatedly shown little interest in returning to the series, especially after some questionable choices were made from writers about her character. There would have to be fresh writers and fresh ideas for her to consider any return.
Duchovny left the series in season 7 and was replaced by Robert Patrick, but returned for both movies and the final two seasons.
As for Coogler’s series, we don’t have very much to work with besides it’ll be a new take on The X-Files.
