In Nimona, the knight Ballister Boldheart is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best sidekick Ballister can hope for. As the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc.

The story, set in a techno-medieval world, draws on ND Stevenson’s popular webcomic-turned-graphic novel. The voice cast includes Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, RuPaul, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman.

Nimona received nine Annie Award nominations; the film ultimately took home Outstanding Achievement for Writing and Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting for Moretz. Next, the film will head to the Oscars. It is nominated for Best Animated Feature, alongside Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron, Pixar’s Elemental, Neon’s Robot Dreams, and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

But whether you’re someone who cares about awards or not, we definitely recommend checking this movie out. THS critic Maxance Vincent called the film “a once-in-a-blue-moon animated miracle”.
