Walt Disney Animation Studios is teaming up with Pan-African company Kugali Media on an exciting new six-part series called Iwájú. The series will stream soon exclusively on Disney+.
Written by Adeola and Halima Hudson and directed by Ziki Nelson, Iwájú is the first “original long-form animated series” produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The title of the show roughly translates to “the future” in the Yoruba language. Per the synopsis from Disney+, the series follows Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.

The story draws its inspiration from the city of Lagos, Nigeria, where the series is also set. The inspiration came from Lagos being “the culture capital of Nigeria”. Both its mainland and island areas have “a unique, distinct feel” that the creatives felt provided a solid base for the story.
Through Kugali filmmakers — including director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku — viewers will go on “a unique journey into the world of Iwájú, bursting with unique visual elements and technological advancements inspired by the spirit of Lagos.”
Iwájú also features the vocal talents of Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia.
It will premiere on Disney+ on February 28, consisting of six episodes.
