I love a multi-cam sitcom. I blame it on growing up in the 90s. No matter what network you were tripping over them. While the multi-cam sitcom has never fully gone away, the amount of them has dwindled. However, that didn’t keep Actor/Writer/Executive Producer, Mike O’Malley from bringing to life one of the funniest and heartfelt series I’ve seen in a long time, Extended Family.

The new NBC multi-cam sitcom, Extended Family is inspired by the true story of Boston Celtic owner Wyc Grousbeck and his wife Emilia Fazzalari. She had an amicable divorce from her Celtics fan ex-husband George Geyer. So, the couple decided to try a technique called “nesting”. Which is when you leave the kids in the family home, but the parents swap out week to week. After learning this story, creator Mike O’Malley (Yes, Dear) thought it would make for a hilarious TV series!

So, I had a chance to sit down with O’Malley to discuss his new series and the importance of the multi-cam sitcom!
