At a special screening in Toronto hosted by Disney Plus Canada and imagineNATIVE, actress Katarina Ziervogel (who plays the role of Taloa, Maya’s mother) talked to That Hashtag Show about her experience acting in the Marvel Studios series Echo, and what message she’d give to her younger self in university.

From Indie Screenwriter to Actress in ‘Echo’

Katarina Ziervogel is incredibly new to the world of Hollywood, having just co-written her first feature film, Finality of Dusk. Echo is also her first acting role. She plays Maya’s mother, Taloa, and has an important role in Maya’s development throughout the season. We asked her what it was like moving from a a small independent film to having a role in a Marvel series.

“Oh my gosh, it feels a little bit overwhelming. I never really imagined that I would jump from that to this because I was writing Finality of Dusk and then to come [to Echo]… Honestly, it’s a wonderful time. They seem like they are just so far apart, even though they were pretty close together when I was completing them. It’s just wonderful that we can show the world deaf representation and indigenous representation in both projects, it’s amazing.”

Her Message for University Students Looking to Succeed

Being so new to the world of film and television, Ziervogel only recently graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University. Now that she’s been seen worldwide in Echo, we asked her what her message to her younger self would be.

“Ooh, I would probably tell my younger self maybe in first year university, you know what? Go for it. Do the whole four years. I know it’s going to be tough but it will be so worth it in the end. It’s such a wonderful experience and everything that you go through in those four years of university is so worth it.”

That time spent studying was surely worth it, as she’s now a crucial part of Echo, and of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Her career is just getting started.
