The Boy And The Heron, the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli did well enough to make it to the top spot at this weekend’s box office.
The Boy and the Box Office
As per Box Office Mojo, Studio Ghibli released The Boy and the Heron in wide release in North America. The movie was released in Japan earlier this year, but this marks the release of the English dub of the film. The film was in first place with $13 Million. This is a historic feat for the film as it’s the first time an original anime movie has made it to the top spot in the North American box office. The movie was also announced as having been nominated for a Golden Globe award.
In the case of deja vu, the box office mostly mirrored what we saw last week. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes held onto second place with a modest $9.3 Million. Godzilla Minus One also retained its third-place spot from last week, bringing in $8.6 Million. Trolls Band Together held onto its fourth-place spot with $6 Million.
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé was the biggest drop of the week and went from first place last week to fifth place this week. The film dropped a staggering 77% to $5 Million. Unlike Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, it seems like the box office was front-loaded with super fans who didn’t return; and didn’t bring with them the general audience to keep the movie in a significant standing.
Poor Things did debut to $661,000 across nine theatres. Which is impressive. Now Searchlight will look to expand the film to more markets and hopefully retain interest. Time will tell.
Wonka Looks To Serve Sweets At The Box Office
Wonka opened in some international markets to $43 Million this weekend. Which is impressive. The movie opens next Friday in North America, and if it retains this high level of interest will sweep at the box office. It’s projected to earn $40 million next weekend, which will likely place it in the number one spot.
As always, we’ll tune in next week to find out.
