The nominees were announced this morning for the 81st Golden Globe Awards. Barbie and Oppenheimer continued the “Barbenheimer” craze and led the way in nominations for film, while the last season of HBO’s Succession made its presence known on the television side.

Barbie came out slightly ahead of Oppenheimer with a total of nine nominations, while the Christopher Nolan-directed film received eight. Following close behind were Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things, which each received seven nominations. Oppenheimer and Killers of The Flower Moon will be joined in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category alongside Anatomy of a Fall, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest. Barbie lightens things up in the Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy category with competition from Poor Things, Air, American Fiction, The Holdovers, and May December.

Other significant nominations for Barbie include Best Actress Musical/Comedy for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Role for Ryan Gosling, Best Screenplay (Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), Best Director (Gerwig), and a spot in the newly added category for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Oppenheimer was no slouch either with a Best Director nomination for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor in a Drama for Cillian Murphy, Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, Best Original Score (Ludwig Goransson), and a nod for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. It’s no surprise that both Barbie and Oppenheimer showed up in the new Golden Globes category as each film grossed $1.4 billion and $951 million, respectively, at the global box office.

Succession came to play for its final season in every television category it could be represented in, including Best Drama Series and three nominations each in the Lead Actor In A Drama Series and Supporting Actor categories for Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong (Lead) and Matthew MacFayden, Alan Ruck, and Alexander Skarsgard (Supporting). The ladies of the series also showed up with Sarah Snook getting a nomination for Best Television Female Actor Drama Series while J. Smith-Cameron was nominated in the Supporting Female Actor category. The series, with a total of nine nominations, broke the Golden Globe record for a television series.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel 1923 also scored some surprising nominations for Best Drama Series and Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Helen Mirren. Her co-star Harrison Ford was noticeably snubbed for his role as Jacob Dutton, but it’s a win for Paramount+ to earn a Drama Series nomination for the first season of the show. It will also compete with The Diplomat, The Last of Us, and The Morning Show for the top drama prize.

Succession HBO

FX’s The Bear was the big winner on the comedy side with a nomination for Best Musical/Comedy Series as well as acting nods for Jeremy Allen White (Best Television Male Actor Musical/Comedy Series), Ayo Edebiri (Best Television Female Actor Musical/Comedy Series) Abby Elliott (Best Supporting Female Actor Television) and Ebon Moss-Bachirach (Best Supporting Male Actor Television). Altogether, The Bear received five nominations on the comedy side, tying Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building, which also landed a Best Musical/Comedy Series nomination and nominations for all three of its lead performers (Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short) as well as a supporting nomination for Meryl Streep’s time on the series. Streep’s nomination marks a record 33 nominations for the acclaimed actress.

It was also a good time for first-time nominees on TV. The documentary-style comedy series Jury Duty scored a Best Comedy Series nomination as well as a Supporting Actor nod for James Marsden. It will have to face off against other comedy vets such as Barry, Abbott Elementary, and Ted Lasso.

The 2024 Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 7, 2024, at the Beverly Hilton and air live on CBS and Paramount+, marking the first time it will air on those platforms following CBS acquiring the rights after NBC decided to not renew their deal.
