The Hollywood Critics Association, now known as the Hollywood Creative Alliance, is undergoing another huge change to their naming. The former HCA Awards are now known as The Astra Awards. That means that everything previously known as the HCA Film Awards, HCA TV Awards, and HCA Creative Arts Awards will become the Astra Film Awards, Astra TV Awards, and the Astra Creative Arts Awards.
CEO Scott Menzel had this to say about the change.
“As the Hollywood Creative Alliance expands to include creatives and other industry professionals, we wanted an award name that would be reflective of the newly relaunched organization. The name ‘Astra’ is a perfect award show title evoking celestial brilliance and creative mastery. It encapsulates the collaborative spirit, symbolizing individual stars and elegantly embodies the industry’s aspiration, innovation, and distinction. This new name symbolizes unity amongst the diverse and inclusive membership of the Hollywood Creative Alliance.”
As for some of the award winners this year, there are three already. Jeffrey Wright is receiving the HCA Acting Achievement Award, Abby Ryder Fortson is receiving the HCA Star On The Rise Award, and Glenn Howerton is receiving the HCA Game Changer Award. All three plus other nominees and winners for Astra Awards will be recognized at the Astra Film Awards event in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, January 6th, 2024.
HCA Vice Chair Yong Chavez had this to say:
“This past year has been a tremendous struggle for most in the industry including those in SAG-AFTRA and WGA. Yet through trying times the film industry continued to persevere, and we at the HCA couldn’t be more excited to honor and celebrate the work of these three extraordinary talents. HCA has always taken great pride in recognizing a wide variety of artists, and with the strikes hopefully behind us, we believe these actors and their phenomenal achievements encompass what we as an organization stand for diversity and unity.”
The nominees for the Astra Awards will be announced on Thursday, December 7th, 2023 at 8:30AM on HCA’s YouTube Channel.
