Netflix has announced that the teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s upcoming film Rebel Moon will be released tomorrow. The teaser trailer will make its global debut live on Gamescom on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

Rebel Moon started life as a “more mature” pitch for the Star Wars universe. The project fell apart after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. It’s the first film to be released by Snyder following 2021’s Army of The Dead.

Rebel Moon is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the army of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. A young woman called Kora with a mysterious past must find warriors from neighboring planets who must come together to stand against the Tyrant.

“As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed,” the synopsis reads.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

The American filmmaker also explained that he had been working on building the film’s universe for two years. “Every corner has to be painted in,” he explained. “I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

Rebel Moon releases on Netflix on December 22, 2023. The film has a star-studded cast which features Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, with Charlie Hunnam and Anthony Hopkins.

Snyder will be co-writing alongside Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. Snyder worked with Hatten on Army Of The Dead and Johnston co-wrote 300 with the director.

The first installment of Snyder’s action sci-fi franchise, Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, will land on Netflix, December 22, 2023. Meanwhile, the second installment is expected to be called Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver and is eyeing a 2024 release.
