A Lord of the Rings MMO (massively multiplayer online) game has been announced by Amazon.

Earlier today, Amazon and Embracer Group agreed to develop a Lord of the Rings MMO. The new game will be developed internally by Amazon Games. It’ll also be published on PCs and consoles alike by Amazon. That means that Embracer is basically licensing the game over to Amazon in its entirety.

There isn’t a release window for the new MMO. Unlike their previous effort, New World, this game will be available on consoles. In the realm of MMO games, where World of Warcraft is still king, New World was released to a relatively large player base and fanfare. So there’s a track record with their games built into a massive IP like Lord of the Rings.

Embracer Group recently acquired the rights to both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings in August 2022. So far, they’ve done The Rings of Power with this partnership and have plenty of other projects in the pipeline.

With the trajectory of how long it takes for MMO games to go from announcement to launch, we might have to wait quite a while for any gameplay or other details. This is the first Lord of the Rings game to be announced since the Embracer acquisition.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is finally releasing on PC and consoles later this year after myriad delays for pandemic and gameplay-related reasons. That game releases on May 25th, 2023.
