Get ready for something delightfully weird. Searchlight Pictures just unveiled a new look at Yorgos Lanthimos’ next feature, Poor Things. The highly stylized, vaguely steampunk sci-fi flick sees Emma Stone go full Frankenstein as she’s brought back from the dead by a strange scientist (Willem Dafoe).
Check out the teaser for Poor Things below.
Truly, this embodies a “teaser” much more than how we usually loosely use the term now. The clip clocks in at just over 30 seconds and barely features any dialogue. It does give an impression of the distinct visual style of the movie, though.
Here’s the official synopsis from Searchlight Pictures for more details:
From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
Poor Things comes from writers Alasdair Gray and Tony McNamara. Director Lanthimos’ previous credits include The Lobster, The Favourite, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
In addition to Stone, Ruffalo, and Dafoe, the film also stars Ramy Youssef as Max McCandless, Jerrod Carmichael as Harry Astley, and Christopher Abbott as Sir Aubrey de la Pole Blessington.
Poor Things premieres September 8.
