I’m sure a lot of people are getting reboot fatigue, but I’m not one of them. So, I’m 100% looking forward to Hulu’s updated movie for White Men Can’t Jump!

The original film was before my time. However, that doesn’t mean I didn’t watch it and not understand what I was seeing. My main memories are Woody Harrelson (Champions), Wesley Snipes (Blade), and a naked Rosie Perez. There was also something about street basketball. THIS is why reboots matter. I shouldn’t have been watching this film at 8 years old, but I didn’t have control of the TV. My 16-year-old brother did.

The original film followed Billy Hoyle (Harrelson) who was a white basketball player that leaned into stereotypes in order to hustle black streetball players out of their money. After duping Sidney Deane (Snipes) the two team up to hustle their neighborhood. There’s the mob involved and all sorts of chaos.

The new White Men Can’t Jump Hulu movie stars rapper Jack Harlow, and Sinqua Walls (Resort to Love). When watching the trailer, it seems they’re not straying too far from the source material. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

MORE ABOUT THE FILM

“White Men Can’t Jump” is a modern retelling of the iconic 1992 film that celebrates the streetball hustling culture of Los Angeles. Sinqua Walls stars as Kamal, once a promising player who derailed his future in the sport, and multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow makes his movie debut as Jeremy, a former star of the game whose injuries stalled his own career. Juggling tenuous relationships, financial pressures and serious internal struggles, the two ballers—opposites who are seemingly miles apart—find they might have more in common than they imagined possible.

White Men Can’t Jump is directed by Calmatic. The series also stars Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Vince Staples, Myles Bullock, and Lance Reddick. The show is written by Kenya Barris and Doug Hall and is also produced by Kenya Barris and Paul Hall. Executive producing by Blake Griffin, Ryan Kalil, Noah Weinstein, Calmatic, Doug Hall, E. Brian Dobbins, and James Powers.

The new White Men Can’t Jump movie hits Hulu on May 19th, 2023
