With The Super Mario Bros. Movie almost here, Illumination and Universal Pictures are hard at work with that film, but they’re also working on some other projects. According to a new interview with Variety, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri talked about a new Shrek film on the way. Here’s what he had to say about the original cast returning for the fifth film.
“We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return,”
He also spoke about a possible spinoff to Shrek starring Donkey. Eddie Murphy had this to say previously when asked about a Donkey spinoff and returning to Shrek.
“If [DreamWorks] ever came with another ‘Shrek,’ I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey. They did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have done a Donkey movie.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”
Meledandri said that “without question” Donkey could support his own film like Puss In Boots did for Dreamworks.
For fans of Shrek, it has been quite a while since we’ve seen the green ogre and Donkey together on-screen. With the trend of Hollywood rebooting everything, a sequel might actually be an interesting idea. An aging Shrek, anyone? Who knows what it’ll be about, but if its like Puss In Boots, we’re set for a great movie.
