Another day, another Star Wars movie going through some creative changes. It wasn’t enough that Lucasfilm had to indefinitely shelf at least two movies. Now it appears that Damon Lindelof’s top-secret Star Wars movie is losing its writers. Above the Line had the first story and other outlets confirm that Lindelof and writer Justin Britt-Gibson have left the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directed film.
Plot details are unknown, but it’s said that this film takes place after the sequel trilogy. Obaid-Chinoy is still on board to direct the film, but they’re looking for a new writer. We might not have to wait very long about details surrounding the project because Star Wars Celebration is next month.
It is said that the film is in good shape otherwise, but losing your two writers, especially ones like Lindelof and Britt-Gibson, is a tough blow. Lindelof hinted at leaving the film in a recent interview with SlashFilm.
“I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If [the film] can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist,” shared Lindelof. “That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with [Star Wars] as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ’77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”
Star Wars Is No Stranger To Recent Turmoil
Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Lucasfilm indefinitely shelved Patty Jenkins‘s Rogue Squadron film and Kevin Feige‘s film he was working on with writer Michael Waldron. At least we still have Taika Waititi‘s film to look forward to. He’s writing, directing, and possibly starring in it. That film could release in the December 2025 slot that Lucasfilm has open on their schedule.
As for Star Wars, it’s really only been about the Disney+ series recently. The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and animated shows like The Bad Batch have been doing some heavy lifting. It’s a shame that we haven’t had any recent films besides 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
We’ll have to see how this story develops as we get more news.
