Disappointing news for fans looking forward to seeing Julia Garner as Madonna in the singer’s biopic. It looks like the movie is no longer moving forwards.
Variety reports the project has been scrapped, apparently by the Material Girl herself. Madonna had planned to direct the feature about her own life. However, it seems she won’t have the time to do so at the moment. She recently announced a huge world tour (of which many stops already sold out).
Sources to Variety say Madonna is solely focused on her tour at the moment, but “remains committed to making a film about her life one day.”
News about the biopic first dropped back in 2020. After cycling through a few script versions, it finally looked like the project would move forward following the casting of Garner. (Garner apparently won out over a number of others, including Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Bebe Rexha.)
The film also would have reunited Madonna with producer Amy Pascal, who worked together on 1992’s A League of Their Own.
So, Madonna fans will simply have to go back to waiting for any chance of a self-directed biopic. But hey, you do have that career-spanning world tour to look forward to.
