News is starting to come in fast for James Gunn’s iteration of Suicide Squad. The latest? According to The Wrap, Michael Rooker is now in talks to play King Shark. Yes, Guardians of the Galaxy alumni Rooker and James Gunn will likely reunite in the DC Universe.
Assuming Rooker ultimately takes the role, He and James Gunn will collaborate for the third time in recent years. As we know, Michael Rooker portrayed Yondu Udonta in both of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films. As The Wrap points out, their long-standing, professional relationship even goes beyond that. Rooker has apparently appeared in every film Gunn has directed. And now he’ll play King Shark.
Michael Rooker in Talks to Play King Shark
For those familiar with DC Comics, King Shark is a supervillain who made his first appearance back in 1994. In the comics, he’s a humanoid shark that wreaks havoc across the Hawaiian Islands. He’s appeared in various Aquaman titles, and served as a villain to the Suicide Squad. Hence his inclusion in the new film.
Rooker is obviously no stranger to playing comic book characters or in comics-based features. Let’s not forget The Walking Dead, in which he played Merle, was born from comic book pages. And, of course, there’s Yondu. King Shark should be an easy transition.
James Gunn joined Suicide Squad while he and Marvel were, well, “on a break, to quote Ross Geller. He will ultimately return to direct Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. Unfortunately he and Michael Rooker can only reunite in Suicide Squad. Yondu perished in Guardians, Vol. 2. Enter King Shark.
