It was only recent news that Henry Cavill wouldn’t return as Superman for any upcoming DC projects. Now, we have even more details about what happened and how we got to this place with DC. After James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to run DC Films, any plans that were in place before were scrapped. According to THR, Gunn, Safran, and Cavill did have a meeting, and Cavill and Gal Gadot both shot cameos for The Flash that will not make the final cut of the film.

Black Adam underwhelmed at the box office to the tune of $389 million worldwide, which canned any future plans for the Dwayne Johnson-starring character. The former studio heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy wanted to make Man of Steel 2 with Brainiac as the villain. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight went as far as writing a treatment for that film before Gunn and Safran were hired.

In the end, Cavill never had a deal in place to return as Superman, just a verbal agreement that the studio would develop future projects. The rest of the old era of DC cast are still in contact, with Cavill possibly having a role down the road. Jason Momoa stars in next year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but there are indications that he could be used for a different DC role after that. Finally, they’ve had conversations with Ben Affleck about directing a DC film.

This all points to a massive reboot for DC Films after the current slate of films come out in 2023. Those leftover films might have a hard time catching audiences.
