Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki will release a new feature under the Studio Ghibli banner in 2023.
Miyazaki directed some of the company’s biggest films, including Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s Moving Castle. However, his last feature-length project, The Wind Rises, debuted nearly a decade ago in 2013.
Now Miyazaki returns with a new film, How Do You Live, scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023. The story is based on the 1937 book of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino. It follows a teenage boy who moves in with his uncle in Tokyo after his father dies.
We don’t have many more details about the film just yet. However, Toshio Suzuki, film producer and Studio Ghibli co-founder, described the production as “fantasy on a grand scale.” Studio Ghibli also shared an image along with the release date announcement. You can check it out below.
That’s all we get for now!
Studio Ghibli’s most recent feature release, Earwig and the Witch, premiered in 2020. It was the studio’s first 3D CG animated film. And just last month Studio Ghibli collaborated with Lucasfilm for an animated short where The Mandalorian’s Grogu meets Soot Sprites.
Miyazaki founded Studio Ghibli back in 1985 along with Suzuki and Isao Takahata. He officially retired after releasing The Wind Rises… but now he’s back for How Do You Live. (Miyazaki previously retired from filmmaking, only to return to direct Spirited Away. The film went on to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.)
So, are you looking forward to Miyazaki’s feature return with How Do You Live? Do you suspect another post-retirement Oscar is on the way? Let us know in the comments below.
