Focus Features Spoiler Alert is based on the memoir of a longer name: Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Other Four-Letter Words. The film stars Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory) and Ben Aldrige (Fleabag) as Michael Ausiello and Kit Cowan, respectively.

Michael Ausiello is a real person. He is a TV columnist, as well as the founder and editor-in-chief of TVLine.com. Spoiler Alert shares his and Kit’s love story along with the hardships in love, as well as the laughter that the two shared throughout their fourteen years together.

Spoiler Alert is fantastic

Jim Parsons and Ben Alridge are absolutely fantastic in this film. Not only do they give individual incredible performances, but their chemistry is also fantastic. I can truly believe their relationship and feel the love, awkwardness, and sadness through the screen. Seriously, I spent the last 20 mins of the film crying, then trying to stop crying, and then crying some more.

You can feel how personal this adaptation is. I have to thank Michael for giving us a peek into their imperfect relationship. As I’m sure a lot of us have, watching these two give it their all, and go to some extreme lengths in order to save their relationship after a decade is refreshing. When you’re with someone that long everything isn’t sunshine and rainbows. The depth of their love and forgiveness is also incredible. In the end, you realize what truly matters and you just love.

BRING THE TISSUES

It’s not surprising, you can see it in the trailer, and read it in the official synopsis. Spoiler Alert, while it has its funny moments, isn’t a happy film. That said, I still found it heartwarming and uplifting. I worry that people will compare this film with Bros that came out earlier this year. If you were to do this, you’d be doing a disservice to yourself and this film. We don’t compare straight films. So, don’t compare these queer films.
