After the absolutely massive (and not quite so hidden) cameo from Henry Cavill‘s Superman in Black Adam, it was thought that his return was a done deal. Now, according to our friends at The Wrap, his return might not be so solid. Their sources are saying that there currently is no writer or director attached to the latest Superman film. They’re also reporting that there is no formal deal in place for Cavill to return.

With the installation of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the bosses at DC, there was some hope that a deal could get made quickly. The duo has been hard at work getting a long-range plan tuned for the DCU. After Cavill left The Witcher, it seemed like it was a foregone conclusion that he would be heading back to play the Man of Steel. We’ll have to see how this story develops as we get more information about what DC’s future looks like. As of right now, Cavill doesn’t officially have a deal in place with DC. It would be unfortunate that Black Adam and the subsequent press tour made a huge deal about Superman being in the film, only for that to never materialize any further.

The upcoming DC schedule includes Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash in 2023. As for anything else, their film slate was drastically changed following David Zaslav taking over as CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery. Movies like Batgirl and The Wonder Twins were outright canceled and others were shelved.
