One of HBO’s biggest original shows of all-tiime, Westworld, has been canceled after four seasons, the network announced Friday. The series recently aired its fourth season finale on August 14th.
According to sources, myriad factors went into the decision to end the sci-fi drama including price tag, dwindling viewership, and of course the ongoing evaluation of programming under the new regime at Warner Bros. Discovery. David Zaslav has already cut plenty of costs in his tenure as CEO of WBD and this just adds to his massacre of content at the company.
Westworld starred Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Angela Sarafyan, Jimmi Simpson, and James Marsden. Here’s the statement that HBO put out on Friday.
Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey.
Creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy put out this statement about the cancelation.
Making ‘Westworld’ has been one of the highlights of our careers. We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so.
It’s a shame that they won’t get to finish their story with a fifth season at HBO, but we can still remember the excellent sci-fi drama.
