[WARNING: Article contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.] Natalie Portman found herself hastily written out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Thor: The Dark World. The actress even said she was done ” playing the part of Jane Foster. Therefore, fans were rather shocked to see her at the Avengers: Endgame premiere. That surprise only increased when the character of Jane made an appearance in the film, seemingly in brand-new footage.
During the Asgard portion of events, Thor and Rocket watch as Jane speaks to some Asgardian attendants before she later lays down in her chambers. At one point, Rocket approaches her and then removes the Aether from her off-camera. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Endgame co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained just how that Natalie Portman cameo came out.
Natalie Portman returns for Endgame… or does she?
The footage of Jane in the distance, as well as in her room, came from left over moments/scenes from Dark World. In order to complete her scenes for the new movie, the Russo Brothers only needed one more thing.
Anthony began to explain just what that thing was. “All [Natalie Portman] did new for this movie was -” he said, before Joe finished for him with, “the voice.”
“A little bit of voice-over when she’s talking in the distance,” Anthony added. “That’s it.” Fans have long speculated about bad blood between the actress and the MCU creators, but if they asked for such a favor and she not only willingly provided, but also attended the premiere, then perhaps things are not so dire after all. If Thor continues appearing in future films, whether with the Guardians or Valkyrie, he may cross paths with his once-beloved Jane again.
