The Naked Gun series started off with Leslie Nielsen in the title role, but now there are talks of a new Naked Gun film. Deadline is reporting that Liam Neeson is in talks to star in a new film from Paramount Pictures. They also say that director Akiva Schaffer is in talks as well. Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers screenwriters Dan Gregor and Doug Mand will write the script. Plot details are scarce but they do say that Neeson may be playing the son of officer Frank Derbin instead of stepping into the role himself. I don’t know, but simply recasting might be more of a Naked Gun kind of vibe than going down the “legacy sequel” path.
Through three films Nielsen made the role his own and gave us plenty of hilarious moments as Frank Derbin, a hardened cop with no common sense whatsoever. The parody of action and cop movies re-launched his career and there were talks about a sequel up until his death in 2010. Seth MacFarlane’s production company, Fuzzy Door is producing the film. Neeson brings some comedic chops from a parody movie like A Million Ways To Die In The West.
The movie has no release date and it’s not known if it’ll show up in theaters or as a Paramount+ exclusive.
