This is going to be an entire weekend of exciting Disney news! Next to come out of D23 Expo 2022 is a list of upcoming Live-Action Disney films over the next few years.
Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, greeted excited Disney fans with a nod to Cynthia Erivo’s fantastic performance in the most recent Disney Live-Action to debut on Disney+, Pinocchio.
Bailey took a moment to reflect on the studio’s incredible live-action history while queuing up three more streaming titles!
We love making movies for the big screen and we have some incredible ones coming up. But what’s so exciting about Disney+ is that it gives us a lot of freedom to tell an even bigger range of stories. We continue to explore reimaginings that honor our Disney legacy. We can also create the next generation of Disney original stories. And of course, we have the chance to explore new chapters of stories we all know and love.
Along with surprises and spectacular trailers for Hocus Pocus 2, as well as Disenchanted fans were treated to even more news!
PETER PAN & WENDY
Joining Bailey on stage were cast members Alexander Molony (Peter Pan), Ever Anderson (Wendy), Alyssa Wapanâtahk (Tiger Lily), and Captain Hook himself: Jude Law! The cast discussed what fans can expect from the new film. As well as, reveal an exclusive first look at the film for the D23 audience.
Peter Pan & Wendy dives deeper into Wendy’s story as she joins the boy who refuses to grow up on a magical journey to Neverland. The film also reveals the history behind Peter Pan’s rivalry with one of Disney’s most memorable villains.
Directing is David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon). Producing the live-action reimagining of the 1953 animated classic is Jim Whitaker.
The live-action film begins streaming on Disney+ in 2023.
HAUNTED MANSION
Directed by Justin Simien (Bad Hair) – who, fun fact, actually use to work at Disneyland, joined Bailey to discuss the upcoming ghostly adventure.
Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Haunted Mansion like the original film starring Eddie Murphy, this version is going to have its own take. This time around the story is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.
While they shared a sneak peek of the film, it was exclusively with the D23 Expo crowd. In more excitement, the queen of scary movies, Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), made an unforgettable entrance aboard a Haunted Mansion doom buggy. Curtis portrays Madame Leota in the film, which is set to release next year.
MUFASA: THE LION KING
This is one I didn’t know about. Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to The Lion King, arguably the best Disney Animated Film of all time. Live-Action, for me, is towards the bottom. While the film will not be released until 2024, Director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) shared a never-before-seen sneak peek.
Mufasa: The Lion King tells the story of the rise of one of the greeted kings of the Pride Lands. And, the story will be told in flashbacks. Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa tell the story of Mufasa to a young lion cub.
SNOW WHITE
The live-action reimaging of the animated feature that started it all! Rachel Zeglar (West Side Story) stars as Snow, and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) as her evil stepmother, the Queen. Both Zeglar and Gadot joined Bailey to talk about their roles, as well as share glimpses of their iconic characters in the upcoming 2024 film.
THE LITTLE MERMAID
I am OBSESSED! Director Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) showed up to share more information about the live-action film. While we only get a snippet of the Part of your World scene in the trailer, they played the whole sequence for fans in Hall D23. Then, invited Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel, to share her excitement about the film. Live-Action The Little Mermaid comes to theaters in the summer of 2024.
What were you most excited about coming out of Hall D23? Comment and let me know!
