The Targaryen saga will continue. After the premiere of just one episode, HBO renewed House of the Dragon for a second season.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon explores a pivotal time for House Targaryen, 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans, among others.
Though the series just recently premiered on August 21, it drew huge numbers for HBO. In fact, almost 10 million viewers watched the series premiere on Sunday night. It marked HBO’s biggest ever original series debut. Between that and the success of the Game of Thrones franchise before it, it’s not too surprising HBO has opted to give the show another season.
Current mid-week viewing numbers bring the House of the Dragon premiere up to 20 million viewers. That figure is expected to grow as we draw closer to Sunday and episode 2 of the series.
“We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with Season 2.”
House of the Dragon premieres Sundays on HBO. You can also stream it on HBO Max.
